The Biggest Pick-Up Trucks On The Market

Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500

The new Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500 are two of the most popular trucks you can buy. Both of them offer you a wide variety of trim levels, configurations and engine choices so it can be challenging to decide which one is the winner.  But it's significant that the Ford F-150 is the best-selling full-size pickup in the country and has been for more than 45 years running. To help you see why the F-150 out-sells every other truck including the Ram 1500, here's a comparison of these two excellent pickups and why we feel confident you'll give the nod to the F-150 at Bill Talley Ford in Mechanicsville, VA.

Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500: Performance

When you compare Ford's twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine and Ram's more straightforward V6, Ford charges into the lead with 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque compared with the Ram 1500's 305 horsepower and 271 pound-feet worth of torque. In comparing the two V8s, Ford pulls just ahead of Ram with 400 horsepower vs. 395 horsepower. When you compare the twin-turbo Ford V6 vs. Ram's V8, it's another victory for the Ford F-150 with 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet vs. 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet for Ram. To finish with a flourish, the Ford F-150's high-output V6 gets one more win with 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque compared with the Ram V6 at 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque.

Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500: Towing Capacity

The Ford F-150 gives truck buyers in Sandston and Hanover the most towing capacity in its class, surpassing the Ram 1500 and every other comparable pickup. The F-150's 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 can tow up to 14,000 pounds which is the best you can get in a full-size pickup. The F-150's V8 can pull 13,000 pounds compared with the Ram 1500's V8 that's just a little behind at 12,750 pounds. Ford also takes the V6 crown with 10,100 pounds of maximum towing capacity compared with Ram's V6 with 7,740 pounds of maximum towing.

A comparison of rankings and recognition

The new Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500 have both earned the top two spots in their full-size class from the experts at U.S. News and World Report. What's more, both trucks have earned an Editors' Choice award from the widely-respected editorial team at Car and Driver. So while both trucks have won a lot of recognition, Kelley Blue Book® will serve as the tiebreaker. The quality professionals at Kelley Blue Book® have declared the Ford F-150 to be the best truck among full-size pickups.

A comparison of engine choices

Ford continues to offer more engine options for Ashland and Richmond buyers than you'd get with any other full-size truck. Ford offers you a selection that includes EcoBoost turbos, high-output turbos and hybrid powertrains as well as a proven lineup of V6 and V8 engine choices. Ram offers a solid set of options as well including a V6, a mild-hybrid V8 and a supercharged V8 engine. It's disappointing that Ram is ending production of the EcoDiesel engine that was one of the most durable powertrains available for its Ram 1500 pickup.

A comparison of beds

Hats off to Ram for engineering some competitive beds in smaller sizes. The Ram 1500 gives you slightly taller sides and a larger overall short bed than the Ford F-150. But when it comes to larger beds, Ford has the edge. The new Ford F-150 gives you a slightly larger 6-foot bed than the Ram 1500 and also lets you choose an 8-foot bed, something that isn't available with a Ram 1500.

A comparison of cabins and bed options

When it comes to cabins, the Ford F-150 gives you three choices while the Ram 1500 offers only two. Ford gives you a total of eight cabin and bed configurations compared with the Ram 1500 that offers just three.
